Messerschmitt Bf 110

The Messerschmidt Bf 110 was constructed on demand of the Luftwaffe for a twin engine fighter capable to escort bombers or for fast bombing attacks. The first prototype started on 12.May 1936 for his first flight. Due to some problems with the motors, the first version which was built in larger numbers was the Bf 100 B which was released in March 1938. The use of the DB 601A lead to the C-Version which saw first operative service in mid of 1939. First positive results against unescorted bombers were fast offset from negative results against modern fighters like the Hawker Hurricane or the Supermarine Spitfire. Therefore the reamining Bf 110 were used for reconnaissance or bombing missions. In the mid of 1941 the Bf 110 was used for the role where it showed the best results, as a nightfighter. Up to the production end in March 1945 round about 6.050 Bf 110 were built in various versions.
